Freedom Begins With Today's Choices

Jul 12, 2026

Freedom is a word we hear often, especially as we celebrate Independence Day. We celebrate the sacrifices that made freedom possible, appreciate the opportunities it provides, and reflect on what it means to live in a free society. Yet the more I think about freedom, the more I wonder if we sometimes overlook where it truly begins.

Perhaps freedom begins long before national holidays, public celebrations, or historic events. Perhaps it begins with the choices we make every single day.

Every morning presents us with opportunities that may seem ordinary at first. We choose how we respond to unexpected challenges. We choose whether to encourage or criticize. We choose whether to listen with understanding or simply wait for our turn to speak. We choose whether to invest in relationships or allow distance to quietly grow between us.

  • Individually, those choices may appear small.
  • Collectively, they shape the direction of our lives.

During this week's podcast, Marla Press shared a thought that stayed with me long after our conversation ended.

"Every day, you can make a new choice. Every day. Everything is up for grabs. Grab for what you want. Make it yours. And enjoy it."

At first, those words simply sounded encouraging. The more I reflected on them, however, the more another realization emerged:

  • Freedom is not only something we celebrate.
  • Freedom is something we practice.
  • Every choice either strengthens the future we hope to build or quietly moves us away from it.

That realization applies just as much to our families as it does to our friendships, our workplaces, and our organizations.

Over the past several weeks, our conversations have explored communication, emotional strength, harmony, healthy boundaries, stewardship, and becoming more Unity Focused. At first glance, those subjects may seem unrelated. Yet each one points toward the same truth.

Leadership is rarely defined by one extraordinary moment. More often, it is shaped by ordinary decisions made with extraordinary intention.

  • When we choose to listen before reacting, we strengthen trust.
  • When we choose to ask for help, we strengthen relationships.
  • When we choose to Encourage, Inspire, and Include others, we strengthen Unity.

Those choices rarely make headlines. They quietly shape our homes, our teams, our organizations, and our future.

One question continues to surface as I reflect on these conversations.

  • If our choices shape our future, what kind of environment are our choices creating for the people around us?

Doesn't that question reach far beyond leadership titles?

The more I think about it, the more I realize that leadership is something we practice long before anyone gives us a title or a corner office. Parents influence children through everyday conversations around the dinner table. Teachers often shape confidence with a few encouraging words that a student may remember for years, possibly decades or even a lifetime.

Managers create environments where people either feel comfortable sharing ideas or quietly decide to keep them to themselves. Friends, neighbors, coaches, and mentors all leave an impression, often without realizing how meaningful a simple conversation can become.

Those moments remind us that leadership is not measured only by the decisions we make. It is also reflected in how people feel after spending time with us. Do they leave feeling more confident? More encouraged? More willing to contribute? Or do they leave wondering if their thoughts and ideas really mattered?

Perhaps that is one of leadership's greatest responsibilities. Success is certainly important, but the strongest leaders also help others discover strengths they may not yet see in themselves. They create environments where people feel safe to learn, grow, ask questions, and contribute. When that happens, individuals become stronger, relationships become healthier, and teams become more connected.

As we celebrate the freedoms we enjoy this week, I find myself thinking about how closely freedom and responsibility have always been connected. Freedom gives us the ability to choose, but our character shapes those choices. Those choices, in turn, influence the people around us in ways we may never fully recognize.

That may be why Unity continues to matter so deeply. Trust is not built through one extraordinary moment. It grows through hundreds of everyday choices to listen with understanding, communicate with respect, and treat others with dignity. Those choices rarely attract attention, yet they quietly shape our families, our workplaces, our communities, and ultimately the future we build together.

Perhaps lasting freedom begins much earlier than we often imagine. Perhaps it begins with today's choices. As you reflect on the week ahead, I invite you to consider one question:

  • What choice can you make today that your future self, your spouse, your family, your team, or your organization will be grateful you made?

The answer may not require a dramatic change. It may simply require one intentional decision that moves you, and those around you, one step closer to the future you hope to build.

Before closing, I want to extend my sincere appreciation to Marla Press for joining us on this week's Achieving Unity Leadership System™ Podcast. Thank you, Marla, for reminding us that every day offers a new opportunity to choose intentionally, embrace possibility, and enjoy the journey we are creating together.

Next Wednesday, July 8, I hope you'll join me as Keith Renninson continues our conversation with "Freedom Is Not Doing It Alone."

If this week encouraged us to think about the choices that shape our freedom, next week we'll explore why some of life's greatest strengths are discovered when we trust others, build meaningful relationships, and grow together. I believe you'll find practical ideas that apply to your family, your career, your leadership, and your everyday life.

The conversation doesn't end here. Tomorrow's AULS Foundations post continues this journey with Unity in Action: Building Stronger Families, Friendships, Teams and Communities. Together, we'll explore how creating an environment where people feel valued, heard, and respected strengthens relationships and allows everyone to contribute their best.

Achieving Unity begins One Conversation at a Time.
