The Next Step Is Usually Smaller Than We Think

Jul 09, 2026

How often do we delay progress by trying to see the entire path before taking the first step?

Doesn’t that uncertainty continue to surface in conversations about leadership, personal growth, careers, relationships, and even everyday decisions? Most people are not afraid of hard work. Most people are not afraid of growth. Yet many of us find ourselves standing still, waiting for something that never quite arrives.

  • Sometimes we are waiting for more information.
  • Sometimes we are waiting for greater confidence.
  • Sometimes we are waiting for certainty.

At first glance, that may seem reasonable. Making thoughtful decisions is important. Understanding the road ahead has value. Nobody wants to create unnecessary problems by rushing into something unprepared.

Yet, when we reflect on many of the meaningful changes that shape our lives, a different pattern continues to emerge.

  • Clarity rarely arrives all at once.
  • Clarity cannot be based on assumptions.
  • Clarity cannot be based on procrastination.

More often than not, clarity grows as we engage with the situation, ask thoughtful questions, and take the next step forward, no matter how small.

Over the past several months, our conversations have explored communication, emotional strength, harmony, boundaries, support systems, change, and what it means to become more Unity Focused. While those topics may seem different on the surface, they often point toward a similar realization.

Growth and progress are usually less about knowing everything and more about being willing to begin. When people tell me they feel stuck, the challenge is rarely a complete lack of direction. More often, they describe a conversation they have been postponing, a decision they keep revisiting, or a goal they continue moving to "someday."

The interesting part is that we often already recognize what needs attention. The hesitation or procrastination stems from what “might” happen afterward.

  • Will the conversation go well?
  • Will the decision work out?
  • Will the effort be worth it?

Those questions are understandable. We all ask them from time to time. Yet waiting for every uncertainty to disappear can keep us standing in the same place long after we are ready to move, long after the next step is ready for us.

One lesson leadership continues to teach us is that true confidence rarely appears before action. Assumptions and opinions may appear. Our ego may jump in but the value of knowing must be the foundation of our leadership

Most of us would prefer the opposite. We would like confidence first and action second. Yet when we look back at many of our accomplishments, confidence often arrived because we took action, learned from the experience, adjusted, and continued moving forward.

  • The first conversation may not have been perfect.
  • The first presentation may not have been perfect.
  • The first leadership opportunity may not have been perfect.
  • What mattered was not perfection.
  • What mattered was participation, but
  • Growth had a chance to begin because someone was willing to start, to take that first step.

That observation reminds us why Unity matters so much in both our personal and professional lives. People tend to move forward more confidently when they feel supported.

  • We are more willing to contribute when we feel included.
  • We are more open to change when we feel heard.

This is why Achieving Unity by Encouraging, Inspiring, and Including others is far more than a slogan. It creates an environment where people feel safe enough to grow. And, growth is difficult when people feel isolated. Growth becomes possible when people feel connected.

As I continue reflecting on the idea of being Unity Focused, another realization continues to shape my thinking.

The next step is rarely as large as we imagine. It may be a conversation or a commitment or it may be a decision to learn, ask, listen, or engage differently than before. Whatever form it takes, progress can begin long before the results become visible.

We must plant the seed before the tree will ever appear. The foundation must be built before the structure can ever stand strong. The conversation must begin before a relationship can grow stronger.

No matter how small the next step may feel, its impact can carry you the distance you need to succeed.

As you reflect on the week ahead, I invite you to consider one simple question:

What is one meaningful step you could take today, or this week, that would move you forward?

  • Not next month.
  • Not someday.
  • Do it today. Do it this week.

You may discover that the path becomes clearer once you begin walking down the one that is right in front of you, one step, one reality, at a time.
