Building Strength Before We Need It

Aug 14, 2026

This week, one idea kept appearing in different ways: what we build before pressure arrives often determines how we move through it.

That thought feels especially meaningful today because this week's conversation is not ending with another post or another idea. It is coming together through The Stress Shield™ Resilience & Leadership Summit Panel, where five experienced panelists and I will explore practical ways to Prepare, Protect, Respond, Recover, and turn pressure into purposeful action.

As we look back over the conversations that brought us here, it is easy to realize we have been building toward this moment all week.

Last Friday, we reflected on The Power of Unity and how much more becomes possible when we stop trying to accomplish everything alone. That conversation began with listening because Unity does not simply appear when people gather in the same room. It begins when we make the effort to understand one another, respect different realities, and discover where we can move forward together.

That matters in business. It matters in a marriage. It matters in a family navigating change. It matters when someone is considering a new career, leading an association, managing a university department, or helping an organization through uncertainty.

The circumstances may be different, but the human need for understanding and support remains remarkably similar.

Monday brought us to BID (Break It Down™) and the importance of prioritization. I have noticed that pressure often makes everything feel equally urgent. When that happens, we can become busy responding to whatever is loudest rather than focusing on what matters most.

Breaking something down gives us room to think again, to rethink the situation.

It allows us to ask what needs our attention now, what can wait, who needs to be involved, and what one step will move us closer to the result we actually want. We may not be able to eliminate every demand, but we can become much more intentional about where we place our energy.

Tuesday's Build Your Stress Shield™ conversation carried that thought one step further by asking whether small habits today can prevent bigger problems tomorrow. I believe there is something reassuring about that question.

Preparation does not require us to predict everything that might happen. None of us can do that. It means recognizing that the small things we consistently do today can strengthen our ability to handle what comes next.

  • A conversation before a relationship reaches a breaking point matters.
  • Taking care of ourselves before exhaustion takes over matters.
  • Learning before a decision becomes urgent matters.
  • Building a support network before we desperately need one matters.

These are not dramatic actions, and perhaps that is why they can be so easy to overlook. Yet many of the strongest foundations in our lives are built quietly.

Then yesterday, my conversation with Dr. Thaint Naing brought another dimension to this week's journey.

As we continue recognizing National Wellness Month, we explored preparing for the future of health and wellness. With extraordinary advances in areas such as regenerative medicine and stem cell therapy, our conversation reminded me that preparing our health cannot begin only after something goes wrong.

  • We can learn.
  • We can ask questions.
  • We can better understand the choices available to us.
  • We can prepare ourselves and help prepare the next generation.

That does not mean we can control every outcome. It means we can become more knowledgeable and intentional participants in our own, and our children's, futures.

And that brings us to today.

The Stress Shield™ Resilience & Leadership Summit Panel

Today's Summit is where many of these conversations come together.

Pressure is part of life. It can appear in leadership, work, health, finances, relationships, family responsibilities, career transitions, or circumstances we never expected.

Our goal is not to promise anyone a life without pressure. Our goal is to help people build the knowledge, relationships, support, and resilience needed to move through pressure more successfully.

During today's FREE live Summit, five experienced panelists will join me to explore practical ways we can Prepare, Protect, Respond, Recover, and turn pressure into purposeful action.

Today’s guests are:

Whether someone is navigating a marriage or divorce, raising a family, changing careers, leading a corporation, serving an association, working within a university, or simply trying to determine what comes next, I believe there is value in understanding that resilience is not something we have to discover alone after life becomes difficult.

We can begin building it now. Perhaps this is our most important realization this week.

  • Preparation is not about living in fear of what might happen. It is about building confidence in our ability to respond when life changes.

What are your thoughts? When you look at the pressures you have handled successfully, how much of your strength came from something you had already learned, a relationship you had already built, or someone who was there when you needed support? For many of us, I suspect the answer is more than we initially realize.

What Do We Take Forward?

After today's Summit ends and everyone returns to their lives, I hope the conversation does not end with us. I hope each person leaves recognizing that resilience can be strengthened. If you or someone you know would like further support, the host and each guest will share their contact information so you can reach out to them after the Summit.

We can become more intentional about protecting the relationships that matter to us. We can prepare before challenges become overwhelming. We can learn healthier ways to respond when circumstances change. We can recover without allowing yesterday's setback to determine tomorrow's possibilities.

And, perhaps most importantly, we can remember that asking for support does not diminish our strength. Often, it expands what becomes possible.

That is where this week's conversations return to where we began last Friday.

Unity expands what becomes possible.

We may each carry different experiences, responsibilities, strengths, and perspectives, but when we listen, communicate, support one another, and work toward meaningful goals together, we create possibilities that rarely exist when we insist on going alone.

Continuing the Conversation

Tomorrow, our AULS Foundations™ conversation continues with another important question: How do we sustain Unity after we have created it?

Building trust is not enough. Communicating well once is not enough. Supporting someone once is not enough. Relationships require continued attention, and so does Unity.

Tomorrow we will explore long-term strategies for sustaining Unity and continued collaboration, grounded in a principle I hope we carry well beyond Friday:

Unity grows strongest when it is intentionally maintained.

Next Wednesday, August 19, on our weekly podcast, as we continue National Wellness Month, I look forward to welcoming Daniel Aaron for a conversation about spiritual leadership and vibrant living. We will explore how spiritual leadership may help us move beyond limitations, discover new possibilities, and pursue meaningful transformation in our everyday lives.

And before we move forward, thank you to Dr. Thaint Naing for yesterday's thoughtful conversation about preparing for the future of health and wellness. Conversations like these matter because understanding gives us more than information. It gives us the ability to ask better questions and make more informed choices for ourselves and those who follow us.
