Can we talk about something that is at the heart of every strong commUNITY?

The balance between rights and responsibilities. We all want to be treated fairly and have our voices heard. That is the promise of equal rights. But there is another side to that coin. If we want to enjoy those rights, don’t we have to be just as committed to the responsibilities that come with them?

It is easy to focus on what we are owed or think we are owed. We hear a lot about our freedoms, freedom of speech, freedom to choose our own path, and freedom to live without fear. Each of these are essential. But, if we only think about what we deserve, we miss out on what we can give. Real Unity happens when we show up for each other.

We have many rights but none of them have a negative impact on another person’s rights.

Responsibility is not just about following the rules. It is about treating people with respect, even when we see things differently. It is about keeping our word and lending a hand when someone is struggling. When we do these things, we build trust, and trust is the glue that holds any group together. We do not look for the wrong or the extreme in each situation.

Sometimes it feels like the world is getting more divided. Social media and the news can make us forget what we have in common. But here is the truth: most of us want the same things. We want to feel safe, valued, and included. We want to share our ideas without ridicule. That is where Encouragement, Inspiration, and Including (EII) others come in.

Encouragement is powerful. A simple word of support can turn someone’s day around. Inspiration pushes us to reach higher and try new things. Including others means making sure everyone has a seat at the table. These are not just nice ideas, they are tools we can use to break down walls and build real connections.

Ending hate and prejudice starts with each of us. It is not always easy to challenge our own assumptions or listen to someone with a different story. But that is how we grow. When we open our minds and hearts, we make space for understanding and change.

Leaders have a special role in understanding and sharing our Rights with our Responsibilities. When leaders admit to their mistakes and work to make things right, they set a strong example. But leadership is not just for people with fancy titles. Every one of us is a leader at various times and we can lead by showing honesty, kindness, and accountability in our daily lives.

We also need our schools, workplaces, and communities to be fair and open. When everyone gets a fair shot and the rules are clear, people feel like they belong. They have buy-in! That is when we start to see real progress.

Unity does not always come from big moments. Many times it starts with small acts, a neighbor helping another, a team working through a tough problem, or a group standing up for what is right. These moments matter. They remind us that we are all in this together.

We are building a future for our kids and grandkids. The choices we make today will shape the world they inherit, their culture. If we want them to enjoy freedom, we have to show them what responsibility means. That is how we pass on something truly valuable.

Let us keep this simple: our rights matter, but so do our actions. When we Encourage, Inspire, and Include others, we create a better life for everyone. Let us hold ourselves and each other accountable, not with blame, but with hope, caring and determination.

Here is our call to action: Reach out to someone who needs support. Stand up for fairness and kindness in your commUNITY. Listen to a new perspective, and share your own with respect. 

When we all do our part, Unity is not just a dream, it is a reality we build together, one day, one step, at a time.
