Solving Problems and Strengthening People with BID-WID-RID-GID

We all live complex lives and what happens at home does not stay there, and what we carry from work often spills into how we show up for our families, our friendships, and even our social engagements.

From the dinner table to the conference room to the commUNITY meeting, we juggle responsibilities, ideas, and expectations that are rarely simple. And yet, when I talk to people, from boardrooms to bedrooms to breakrooms, I see something remarkable: most problems, no matter where they start, can be solved in similar ways.

In every area of life, personal, professional, social, spiritual, or political, I have found a consistent truth: when we break things down, write things down, review their impact, and then take real action, we get things done. We can create anything from short-term change to long-term improvements! And, even more importantly, we pull people together in the process.

That is the heart of my BID-WID-RID-GID principle:

Break It Down – Write It Down – Review Its Dependencies – Get It Done.

It is a mouthful, but it is also a mindset that helps people stop spinning and start solving. It helps us create solutions one reality at a time.

The Power of Breaking It Down

Take for example, a team I worked with that had been stuck for months. It was the usual situation where morale was low, deadlines were missed and the problem felt too big to even talk about because of the lack of communication. So, what did we do, we broke it down.

What exactly is the problem? Who is affected? Where is it stuck?

Within an hour, we moved from frustration to clarity. Breaking things down helped everyone see each part, the real cause, and what could actually be done today, not someday.

It is like cleaning out a cluttered garage. You do not start by worrying about the whole thing. You start by opening the door, picking one corner, and getting your hands on something real.

Writing It Down: Making the Invisible Visible

Once the issues were clear, we wrote them down, every task, every question, every concern. It was not a fancy report. It started with a whiteboard, a Sharpie, and some sticky notes. But something shifted in that room. Of course, before we shifted into first gear, we started the EII (Encouraging, Inspiring and Including others) engine!

Writing things down removes guesswork. It turns ideas into plans. It invites accountability. It also invites collaboration because people can literally see what is going on. They begin to buy-in to the product or service. It becomes real.

This works just as well at home. I once helped a father who felt overwhelmed and unheard. I encouraged him to sit with his teenage daughter and write out what they each felt they needed from each other. The result was not just a better conversation; it was a breakthrough. They understood each other better because they saw their thoughts in writing, in understanding.

Reviewing Dependencies: You are Not Alone

Here is where things get even more interesting. Every challenge depends on something else: a person, a resource, timing between events, or a decision. When we stop to review what else is connected to the issue, we uncover the web of people, processes and systems that are involved.

This does not complicate things, it clarifies them. It also builds empathy. When we realize we are part of a bigger system, we tend to shift from blame-work to team-work.

This is where EII rings loud and true. Reviewing dependencies reminds us we are not in this alone. We need each other to move forward (Unity). We invite others to contribute their ideas and effort. We build trust and ownership.

Getting It Done: The Best Part

Once the clarity is there, once the writing and planning are done, it is time to pull it all together.

And this is my favorite part, because this is where confidence grows. Whether you are solving a business challenge, rebuilding a relationship, or reshaping a commUNITY culture, when people start doing, the energy changes. And we celebrate all accomplishments.

BID-WID-RID-GID is not about rushing or fixing everything overnight. It is about real, forward movement. The movement may only start with a phone call, a conversation, a new habit, or a small project launched. But action, no matter how small, creates momentum.

People feel it. They feel seen, valued, included. That is where Unity has taken root.

The BID-WID-RID-GID principle is more than a process, it is a mindset that fits every setting because it respects every person. It creates space for people to speak honestly, think clearly, work together, and take action that matters.

I have used this approach with corporate leaders, struggling teens, fractured families, church groups, and nonprofits on the verge of giving up. And the result is almost always the same: we create a breakthrough.
